Back to Prague Castle....

St. Barbara Cathedral, Kutna Hora, Czech Republic We rented a car (an Opel Corsa, to be precise) and took a day-long drive around the central Bohemian countryside. The first stop was Kutna Hora and St. Barbara's cathedral. This church has flying buttresses galore, and, on the interior, is one of the lightest and airiest cathedrals I've ever visited.
'Bone Church' in Kutna Hora
The tiny village of Sedlec, just outside Kutna Hora, is the home of a much smaller and odder church, the 'Bone Church.' This was a small church surrounded by a cemetary for plague victims. In 1870, a local woodcarver exhumed many of the skeletons and arranged them, inside the church, into pyramids, chandeliers, and other shapes. This is one of the most bizarre sights I've had the dubious pleasure of seeing.
Nieka in a field across from Cesky Sternberk
Our next stop was Cesky Sternberk, a chateau outside of Prague. A Sternberk still lives in the chateau, and offers tours of the majority of the facility to help pay for upkeep and restoration. Large, well-lit rooms give the place a cheerful atmosphere in the summer, but it was chilly in August and must have been terribly cold in the winter.

On to Krakow....
